NHS Annual Meeting rescheduled for Dec. 2

Because of Hurricane Wilma’s recent visit to South Florida, we have postponed our 2005 Annual Meeting Luncheon originally scheduled for November 3. New arrangements:

Date: Friday, December 2
Time: Noon to 2 p.m.
Place: Radisson Hotel Miami, 1601 Biscayne Boulevard
      (formerly the Omni hotel)
Speaker: Leslie Chapman-Henderson, FLASH. www.flash.org

RSVP required:
Contact Tim Shenk at tims@mdnhs.org or 305-751-5511 x233.

If you have already reserved your place, we will transfer your reservation to the new date. Please notify us if you cannot attend on December 2 or if you would like to invite additional guests.

Our keynote speaker will be Leslie Chapman-Henderson, CEO/President of the national nonprofit, Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH).

FLASH works with partner organizations to facilitate disaster safety education programs. It sponsors outreach initiatives to encourage citizens to build, buy and use buildings that are constructed or retrofitted with disaster safety in mind.

This hurricane season should be a wake-up call for us all to take more comprehensive measures for disaster safety. Ms. Chapman-Henderson will increase our awareness of the resources available to do so.

Luncheon is sponsored; there is no cost to attend.

Brownsville leader wins "Local Heroes" award from Bank of America

Everett Stewart, Sr., a leader in the Brownsville neighborhood for decades, has won a Bank of America Foundation “Local Heroes” award for his life of service to his community. He will choose a charitable organization to receive $5,000 at a public ceremony on December 6.

Mr. Stewart’s passion and persistence is unrivaled in making Brownsville better. He was a founding member of the Brownsville Neighborhood Civic Association in 1979 and has served as its president since 1993.

He has fought for and achieved major improvements in the neighborhood, including: street lights, sidewalks, a new sewer system, and Brownsville’s first park, bank, and shopping center.

Mr. Stewart has been an invaluable resource in NHS’ neighborhood revitalization project in Brownsville. He participated in the NeighborWorks® Community Leadership Institute in May and has been an enthusiastic partner in NHS’ effort to make Brownsville a community of choice. Congratulations!
