NHS hosts NeighborWorks® Community Leadership Institute

Miami , FL – Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) is hosting one of the largest training events in the nation for residential leaders at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel beginning today through May 15.

More than 500 community leaders from 15 states will participate in the NeighborWorks® Community Leadership Institute (CLI) to learn how to strengthen their communities and revitalize their neighborhoods through grassroots activism.

“Buildings can be rehabbed and services provided, but it is the people who live in those communities who will make sure changes last over the long run,” said Ken Wade, CEO of NeighborWorks® America.

In addition to hosting the event with NeighborWorks® America, NHS is sending 20 residents from the Brownsville neighborhood to the symposium’s workshops and group activities.

“When people go to this type of event, they see there are 500 other people sharing similar experiences and they soon realize they are not the only ones trying to improve their neighborhood,” said NHS Executive Director, Arden Shank. “They can then learn from one another and take solutions or a new approach back to their community to get something done.”

Affordable-housing fund threatened

The Miami Herald, May 3, 2005

A legislative effort to divert a significant part of the state's affordable-housing fund is raising concerns among city and county officials. The Florida Senate voted 27-11 on May 2 to put a $263 million cap on the amount of money that goes into the trust fund, beginning in 2007.

"We're going to become the land of the haves and have-nots," said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Katy Sorenson. "Florida is becoming more and more expensive to live in, especially South Florida, and it makes no sense to redirect such an important funding source."
