Armed with paint brushes and landscaping tools, Neighborhood Housing Services, (NHS) a NeighborWorks organization, and 130 volunteers painted and landscaped five homes for low-income seniors around the Brownsville area.
Dorrin D. Rolle, District 2 Commissioner of Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners, Coral Gables Congregational Church, Washington Mutual, Regions Bank, Mercantil Commercebank, OneUnited Bank, Citibank and Great Florida Bank sponsored the event that galvanized volunteers from all corners of Miami. The enthusiastic volunteers performed minor repairs and painted the exterior of homes for Virginia Jordan, Bernadine Cooper, Rosetta Higgins, Pearl Graydon, and Naomi Gibson and John Williams.
Asked about Neighborhood Housing Services, Virginia Jordan said: “The work of NHS is a good thing for young or old people. I’m so glad they got in touch with me.” Korean War veteran, John Gibson echoed: “Neighborhood Housing Services’ work will be a big help to this neighborhood. We couldn’t afford this on our own.”
According to Arden Shank, executive director and president of NHS, the neighborhood revitalization activities are part of its mission to “…build empowered communities, revitalize neighborhoods and create affordable housing opportunities in South Florida.”
